What is rape?

Rape is the forceful penetration of a male organ into a female sexual organ or vice versa without the consent of the vulnerable party.

What is sodomy?

It is forceful penetration of a male sexual organ into the anus of another without his/her consent

Who can be raped?

Anybody, to an abuser any vulnerable human being is susceptible to his heinous act, the offenders have no regard for age, class, gender, relation status, profession or standing in life as long as you are vulnerable, you are no exception

How does a rapist /sodomiser look like?

Basically Rapists and sodomisers have no ‘trade marks’ they look and act like you and me, they come from all types of social economic backgrounds and although the majorities are male, there are female offenders too

When does rape/Sodomy Occur?


Anytime, there is no specific time in a day or night when these heinous acts cannot take place as long as it is convenient to the Rapists /Sodomiser. They Strike when they deem you susceptible to satisfy their evil lust so always BEWARE

Experience from cases received at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital –Gender Violence Recovery Centre show that most cases of rape take place between 5pm to 12pm in the evening while waiting for public transport, Matatu hijackings, and forced robberies with violence

Where can one be Raped/ Sodomised?


Anywhere! As long as there is no one else to distract the abuser. This could be in the office, home, bush, car, classroom, church, mosque, Classroom etc

•    Many women were abducted and raped whilst waiting for public transport.  The Centre has identified several notorious bus stops, which are sited near heavily forested areas/secluded places/cemeteries/areas not well lit.
•    Incidences of women and men raped as a consequence of Matatus hijacking and robberies in homes are very common
•    Children are being sexually assaulted everywhere: - they are being abducted from their homes, on their way to/from school, to the shops and in other public places.

Why is one Raped/Sodomised?

As long as one is alone he/she is vulnerable and an easy target, the offenders are bold to abuse victims in the comfort of their houses


Can Rape or Sodomy involve more than one incidence?

Yes and please be informed it will only get worse as the offender consistently molests. It is an addiction, so report immediately.

What are the possible causes of Rape/Sodomy?

  •   Family dynamics:- e.g. divorce, separations, too many children
  •   Previous abuse of the abuser
  •   Alcohol/substance abuse
  •   Increased crime and insecurity e.g. car jacking, robbery
  •   Internet, Media influence,
  •   Unmet expectations/ frustrations of the abusers
  •   The myth on HIV/AIDS versus virginity belief
  •   History of abuse or maltreatment.
  •   Poverty –exploitation of the poor and limited access to justice for the poor
  •   Helplessness for the vulnerable groups e.g. children, physically/mentally challenged
  •   Social cultural factors


What are the Dangers of Rape/sodomy?


The effects of abuse range from possible infections and psychological traumaand include:

  • Physical injuries
  • Infections – STI’S, HIV/AIDS.
  • Chronic ill health-Recto Vaginal Fistulae (RVF)/Vesico-vaginal fistula (VVF)
  • Lax rectal muscles & Incontinence due to sodomy
  • Unwanted Pregnancies, Infertility
  • Rape trauma syndrome and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Disturbed sleep-nightmare
  • Regressive behaviour e.g. bedwetting, thumb sucking
  • Drug abuse – an attempt escape from reality of the stigma of sexual abuse
  • Denial/ Docile/insecure/mistrust/poor self-concept/low self esteem.
  • Anxiety and suicidal thoughts
  • Spiritual dilemma as the individuals tend to question their faith in God - Most survivors ask where was God when this was happening?
What are the most dangerous spots?

Rape/Sodomy can take place anywhere, even in our safest places and in the safest hands, but it is important to avoid being unaccompanied at the wrong place and at the wrong time especially with people we have no clue about or don’t trust.


Where is the risk of rape or sodomy greatest to children and other victims?


In most cases it no longer strangers but well known and people trusted by these children and other victims such as

•    Baby seaters (House Helps)
•    Teachers
•    Fiends
•    Relatives
•    Shopkeepers
•    Religious priests
•    Policemen

Why do I need to take caution?

Because we can no longer trust anyone around us irrespectively of how close we are to him or her, we are all vulnerable irrespective of class, relation, gender, age, or standing in life




How can I know a rapist/sodomiser?


He/she has queer behaviour that ranges from any form of sexual exploitation, touching or fondling of the to-be victim’s genitalia, oral genital contact to the forceful type where his/her position provides opportunity to molest the victim

What do I do when am about to be raped/sodomised?


Shout loudly for help and fight back without fear of what may transpire as these offenders are also in a state of fear and alertness, at that point in time do not fear you may avert this menace

What do I do when I am being raped or sodomised?

Keep fighting while at the same time shouting loudly and use anything at your disposal for self defence

Now that I have been raped /sodomised what do I do?


Immediately seek for help from the nearest:
•    Responsible adult
•    Heath Facility e.g. Nairobi Womens Hospital
•    Authority figure around you
•    Police station

It is a fact that those who seek for help from professional counsellors, family members, friends or others have been found to cope better than those who simply suffer in silence. Talk out!

Why Medical tests?
Doctors and nurses have the capacity to establish and control infections through blood tests especially STDs, HIV/AIDS tests, it is advisable for one to often go for medical tests diligently

The long-term emotional and psychological effects of rape or sodomy can be devastating to the victims and they can go along way to affect their spiritual, mental, social, economic and physical lives. Counselling will help you make peace with yourself.
