The Gender Violence Recovery Center which is a charity trust of The Nairobi Women's Hospital, has been providing specialized medical treatment and psychosocial support to survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence.  The center targets mainly women and children survivors of gender based violence although male survivors also make use of its services. 

 

So far, we have been providing consultation and tests to confirm the assault and document it, after which we administer medication to prevent pregnancy, to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS, and to treat other sexually transmitted infections that occur as a result of the assault, all free of charge.   We have to date treated over 3,800 survivors at the center, and we work closely with other organizations to offer any other assistance such as shelter, and legal assistance to the survivors.

 

The Gender Violence Recovery Center remains the only such facility in the East African Region and has experienced an overwhelming demand for it's services.  The medical aid, together with the follow-up counseling services that the hospital makes available have literally saved the lives of survivors whilst ensuring that the subsequent quality of life of a survivor is much enhanced. 

 

We have full time counselors six days a week, with counselors on call after hours to provide emergency services.  Counselling services include HIV support group and Rape support group sessions held on a monthly basis.  Apart from specialized trauma counseling, we also offer general counseling.

 

This center depends solely on funding from donors and well-wishers.  Donations can be sent to:
