Advocacy
The Gender Violence Recovery Centre has significant and unique in-depth insight of the concerns most important to the survivors of sexual and domestic violence and the day-to-day realities the survivors face. From the 12,000 survivors seen, at the centre this is a major motivation for engaging in advocacy.

GVRC has been engaged previously in influencing policies such the Sexual Offences act 2006 and called upon human rights based commission of inquiry to offer expert evidence and statistics on issues concerning gender based violence.

In line with this, and to challenge itself to step beyond the immediate problems and concerns with which the organisation deal on an everyday basis, and to address the larger social and policy issues leading to gender-based violence and affecting the survivors, GVRC has initiated an advocacy project supported by PLAN DANIDA.

The project consists of three components i.e. capacity building, policy advocacy and service delivery and is addressing sexual and domestic violence with a specific concern for the child survivors. Hence, the project cuts across themes and sectors such as gender equality, child protection, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health - and especially the health and the legal sector.

OBJECTIVES

•    Enhanced enforcement and implementation of the laws and policies relevant to gender-based violence
•    The Gender Violence Recovery Centre is a recognized voice in the society regarding gender-based violence

•    The Gender Violence Recovery Centre is in a stronger position to do effective advocacy in partnerships with other stakeholders addressing gender-based violence

Currently the project is in its inception stage. It plans to involve other partner organizations in the identification of an issue for advocacy, identification of a strategy and implementation.
The project will run for two years starting 2009 to 2011.
