Counselling

Counselling services are offered to all survivors of gender based violence and their families because they suffer from physical, psychological and emotional distress. Counselling helps the survivors to deal with the traumatic experience by developing positive coping mechanisms that enables them to live beyond the ordeal and to move on with life.

Counselling unit has several activities that take place:

 

Counselling services – The counselling services are available six days a week –from Monday to Saturday. These services are available in both our branches in Adams and Hurlingham. Counselling services are not only offered to survivors of gender based violence and their families but also to anyone who walks in the department in need of help. counselling services are offered in other areas such as; HIV / AIDS Counselling, Child and Adolescent Counselling,  loss and grief  counselling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Drug and Substance Abuse Counselling among others.

 

 

Support groups; that is, support group for survivors of domestic violence, survivors of rape and People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs), Support groups take place once a month and the membership is open. Members come together to support one another by sharing their experiences and coping mechanisms thereby instilling a sense of hope to each other.

 

 

Creation of awareness on Gender Based Violence and HIV/AIDS through trainings and open forums e.g giving talks in schools, churches, companies etc.

 

 

The unit offers Voluntary Counselling and Testing Services (VCT)

 

 

Referrals – Counsellors refer necessary cases for further assistance to different organizations mainly for legal aid and shelter services.

 

 

Counsellor’s supervision- All the GVRC counsellors attend group supervision sessions once a month as part of their professional requirement; they share challenging client work with the supervisor as well as other personal and  other stressors that limit their effectiveness and necessary support is offered .

 

 

Personal Therapy Sessions-Counsellors’ attend to their individual sessions when needed with their personal therapists as a way of getting support in dealing with personal issues inoder  to reduce stress and burnout.

 

 

Continuous Medical Education (CME) – The counselling department organizes monthly short courses for the counsellors and other staff in the hospital. The courses are normally facilitated by a visiting guest and this helps the counsellors to have in-depth knowledge of relevant topics that present themselves in the counselling set up.

 

 

Student internship and volunteering programme-Counselling department offers internship and volunteering opportunities to students who get to put into practice the skills learned in class under the guidance and supervision of the GVRC counsellors.

 

  Report Writing-GVRC counsellors are involved in preparing weekly, monthly, Quarterly and Annual reports that are then shared with the partners and the general public as a way of giving feedback on the trends and impact of counselling services.
