GVRC Achievements GVRC has established a Gender Monitoring and Evaluation Unit (GVMU). Since inception GVRC has treated over 12,000 survivors of GBV: with approximately 45% being children, 49% women and 6% men respectively. GVRC has noted increasing reporting of sodomy cases especially meted on school going boys and girls. The GVMU was made possible through the installation of project management software. The software caters for both data management and financial management of the GVRC program/projects. GVRC as an institution has developed and documented operational policies namely human resources, standard operating procedures, A framework for standards of care for providing PEP, policy guidelines, quality assurance standards for GVRC operations, job descriptions etc. Training Health workers, police, CBOs on Management of rape and PEP treatment in Coast region, Rift Valley and Western provinces. A total of 12 hospitals were trained on rape management, 24 doctors, 24 trauma counselors (12 facility based and 12 community based), 24 child counselors, 24 community/opinion leaders, 320 senior police officers between 2005/2006 Community awareness workshops and forums were conducted and over 20 churches reached, 4 public and private universities, 2 primary schools, 5 major low income estates reached namely Kibera, Korogocho and Mukuru, Kawangware and Eastleigh (target the refugees too). A six moths public awareness cum fundraising campaign is currently running in all the Kenyan media houses i.e. 4 televisions, 18 radio stations including vernacular languages(to reach the rural persons), 3 print dailies and 2 major magazines created awareness on sexual assault and domestic violence. Training manuals - Rape Management, Trauma counseling, Child counseling and Gender issues. Rape Red spots: Bill boards were initially put in the sites to educate people about rape. The globe cinema roundabout as well as the railway red spot is now matatu terminus, well light and each has a police post. Sexual Offences ACT: GVRC provided statistics which were used in the lobbying and advocacy of the sexual offences act. The Act has helped in reforming the law and it enhances harsher punishments for the sex offenders. The law provides for male rape, sodomy, rape using objects and it now has established minimum sentences to act as deterrents to would - be for sex offenders. GVRC together with other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) lobbied the government to convert some of the police stations to set up gender and children desks. This led to the conversion of Kilimani police station to exclusive handle gender based violence meted on women and children. The work of Nairobi Women's Hospital GVRC has bridged the gap of psychological therapy to survivors of sexual and domestic violence, both one on one and group therapy to survivors and their families. Community counseling is offered in form of community awareness with different target groups. The work of GVRC has also made other organizations start up other forms of services to assist the survivors of GBV e.g. The Womens Rights Awareness Program (WRAP) providing temporary shelter to abused women and their families, Goal Kenya rescue centre which provides rescue and shelter services to abused children, African Network for the Prevention and Protection Against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN) that provides legal aid children survivors of GBV etc |
